Fall News and Nov 21 Opening/Holiday Exhibition

Detail of Through a Garden Lens

Cold and rain have arrived and the holidays are right around the corner, which makes me nostalgic about those lazy summer days (though I certainly don't miss the heat!). I've been busy the last month creating a series of botanical vignettes, vertical narrow pieces that harken back to the season of endless sun and warmth. Works are now on view at the Columbia City Gallery. I hope you'll consider joining me and more than 20 other artists for the opening this Saturday, Nov 21, from 5-8 pm at 4864 Rainier Ave S, Seattle WA 98118. It's our annual holiday show, and it looks to be one of our best shows yet!

I'm also excited to announce that I've created mini calendars showing artwork created during the last year. They should be arriving from the printers just in time for the opening. These are 5 x 7", unbound, suitable for putting up on a bulletin board or on the fridge, and when the month is over, the calendar can be trimmed away leaving a 5 x 5" image. In the new year I'm looking forward to creating some really cool pieces. I have some great ideas involving new construction techniques, shapes and forms - I can't wait to share them.

In October, I participated in the Artist Trust EDGE professional development program, which is a great program that aims to help artists learn and grow their professional practice. I spent a week in Port Townsend, WA, with 17 other artists of all mediums (and only 2 other photographers). I was able to focus on my artistic career, thinking about where I want to go and how to get there. It was a great experience and I met a whole group of new friends and peers. There was a lot to take in, and I expect I'll be putting some of the things I learned into practice over the next few years and beyond.

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving. Stay warm everyone.

Summer of Encaustics

Summer is in full swing, and temperatures are in the '90s here in Seattle. Perfect time to set up the hot plate and make some more encaustics(!!!). I spent the July 4th holiday printing up three new works, mounting them to panels, then making a fresh batch of encaustic medium before applying it to the panels. They've just been delivered to the Columbia City Gallery where the hanging committee is busy laying out and installing all the pieces. I'm excited to share the gallery with the Northwest Encaustics, who will be featured in our guest gallery this month. If you like encaustics, this will be a great show.

I've been busy this summer shooting lots of raw material to have on hand in preparation of new pieces. I'm trying to incorporate more symbolism in my images, and to provide more of a story line undertone. With that in mind, I've included the American flag in a new piece, "Memorial." I hope the new direction is successful. If you'd like to check out this new batch of work, join me Saturday, July 11, from 5-8 pm for the opening at the gallery, on the main drag in Columbia City.

Multiple Facets Preparation (Show Opening 2/28)

Been busy the last 2 months getting ready for a featured show at the Columbia City Gallery. Opening night will be Saturday, Feb 28, from 5-8 pm. The theme is "Multiple Facets," so I've decided to make mixed media pieces rather than my typical framed photographs. The media will be photographs mounted to wood panels (hand built), with encaustic. Several of the works will be on multiple panels comprising a single piece, while the actual imagery is comprised of multiple layers of film. It's a big departure from my past work, and I've been super excited working on it and in the hand-building process. Here are some process images to whet your appetite. The encaustic application is happening this weekend, and the work gets turned in on Sunday. Next week I'll have more photos of the actual installation to provide, so stay tuned...
